Materials Matter
Why Handmade Wool Rugs Endure
A balanced look at the texture, longevity, and character of handwoven wool rugs compared with printed and machine-made alternatives.

The Tradeoffs
A Fair Comparison
Printed and machine-made rugs can be practical choices: they are often more affordable, widely available, and easier to replace when a space changes. However, their synthetic fibers are typically made from petroleum-based plastics like polypropylene, nylon, and polyester and can negatively impact indoor air quality. This is due to off-gassing and chemical treatments applied to these materials.
Additionally, the tradeoff is usually in material and construction. Printed designs sit on a surface rather than being formed through knots or woven color, while many machine-made rugs use synthetic fibers that may not age, repair, or feel like wool. Quality varies widely in every category, so fiber content, construction, and intended use matter more than a label alone. Lastly, the replication and exploitation of reputable Persian rug designs is an unfortunate norm in the new age of design.
The wise choice is genuine, handwoven wool over synthetic plastic!
